Red and White

Ever walk across a bridge
over a free way
when it's dark outside.
Red is going,
white is coming,
red is going,
white is coming.

At the Bridge of the Gods,
there is a mural painted
on one of the columns
that holds the toll bridge
into the sky.
It's base of support.
The mural is of Lewis and Clark
bigger than life.
The token Indian
supporting actress,
Sacajawea
in tow.
The other Indians,
mostly naked
before the superior
clothed white men,
are seen scampering up a hill
on the other side of the river.
Their figures are small enough
to only be extras
on the set of the great white men
known as Lewis and Clark.

Have you ever crossed a bridge
over a freeway
when it is dark outside.
Red is going,
white is coming,
red is going,
white is coming.
